Is there anything worse than getting rejected for a job?

Yes! Getting ghosted and never hearing anything back. 😨

Ghosting can happen at any stage of the application process and it always feels like you've been sent to recruitment purgatory. At least when you receive a rejection email, even if it's an automated template response, you can close the (mental) loop and move on.

Ghosting can make you feel like you did something wrong but, not knowing what that is, how can you start improving? It's unfair and inexcusable but it's the reality for all job seekers with more than 75% claiming they have been ghosted, according to data from Greenhouse.

But, let's try to focus on solutions here and, particularly, try to take a preventive approach: what can you do to avoid being ghosted as a candidate?

The best way, in my experience as a hiring manager, in a single sentence: 👉 make your application unforgettable.

Not only you will set your application on top of the pile but it will show a level of effort and commitment that is frankly heartless if you ignore it (and who wants to work with heartless people, am I right?).

How to make a truly unforgettable job application

  1. Cover letters that pop: video, visual presentation, compelling storytelling - don't be afraid to be bold and showcase your creativity. Find the means that best represent the wonderful talents you want to highlight and go for it.

  2. Attention-grabbing follow-ups: if you want to ask for feedback and/or send a little reminder to the hiring manager, don't waste your opportunity on a boring email. Send a short video or 2-slide presentation on why you would be great for this role with a call to action. Alternatively, take all the insightful information you gathered during the interview and turn it into a mini case study or SWOT analysis to really showcase your industry expertise.

  3. Thoughtful thank you notes: instead of another email, try sending a handwritten thank-you card or a small appreciation gift such as an energy bar. Even better if the little gift is somehow relevant to the conversation you had with the hiring manager, such as your favorite book.

Why this approach works

  1. You're showcasing your creativity and persistence.

  2. It's a great conversation starter for your next interview.

  3. It will align well with the company's values for innovative mindset (assuming they truly embrace that).

  4. You're really making an effort to contribute to the company's success, even before you're hired.
